Onomatopoeia

Pop Art Onomatopoeia Words: 

Day 1 - Students went through magazines and cut out any black and white text they could find and collaged them together. This layer is supposed to look like a newspaper page. 

Day 2 - They chose a word to draw and color using a group of primary or secondary colors.  I showed students how to draw ben-day dots to look like newspaper print.

Day 3 - Cut the black and white page into a starburst shape and assemble all pieces together.

Stuart Davis - Name Collage

This project is based on the work of modern artist, Stuart Davis, who often used letters, words, and basic shapes in his paintings. Students were instructed to used only the letters from their first, middle, and last names to fill their page. After using different fonts and colors we took a day to find letters from magazine pages to fill in any extra spaces.

Hip to Haring!

We started this lesson by having three students strike a pose in the front of the room. The rest of the class can choose one to draw (30 seconds - 1 minute) in the style of Keith Haring. Switch students until everyone has a turn. Final composition can contain elements from Haring's drawings or their own using a similar style. I wish we had more time for them to finish coloring them but I was very impressed by the imagination and creativity that went into these!

Pop Art Cats

Here are some kitties based on Andy Warhol's "Sam" paintings. After a guided drawing, students fold paper into fours. Next, they colored each section individually (helpful if they color each square while the paper is folded. We were excited about the results and love all the bright colors!
