Warm and cool colors

 Students were given a basic design guideline and instructed to separate warm and cool colors. Some students were very creative in making their design more unique.

Stuart Davis - Name Collage

This project is based on the work of modern artist, Stuart Davis, who often used letters, words, and basic shapes in his paintings. Students were instructed to used only the letters from their first, middle, and last names to fill their page. After using different fonts and colors we took a day to find letters from magazine pages to fill in any extra spaces.

3D Lines - Paper sculpture

A great way to use up scraps of construction paper in a way that is meaningful and fun! Before starting, we took a look at some of Dr. Seuss's buildings and landscapes. We reviewed accordion folds and paper chains, the rest was up to the students' imagination!

Line Type Owls

First and Second graders filled owls with as many types of lines as they could and then colored the rest of the owl to make it unique to them. The children were very proud of the results and excited to see them hanging up on display. 

I am... I can... I will...

One of my favorite projects this year!
Day 1: Start with writing prompt: I am... I can... I will... focusing on positive aspects of themselves. If time allows, introduce project and have students begin sketching a layout.
Day 2: Tape poster board to a wall, have student sit between projector (or bright light source) and the wall. Trace profile of face on paper.
This project can be done many different ways. I gave students the starting point of filling their head with drawings of objects that mean something to them and using their writing prompt to fill the background... but I wanted them to be creative in their designs and left the project open to interpretation.

Liquid Watercolors

Monet Water Lilies

A sweet two day project for first grade, giving them some experience in watercolor painting. 

Day 1: Draw lines on watercolor paper with crayon, paint over entire sheet with cool colors.

Day 2: Dip coffee filters into liquid water color, set aside to dry. Cut out lily pad and assemble. 

Kindergarden alphabets:

Trace letters with crayon for resist and paint with watercolor.

Night / Day

5th and 6th grade divided paper in half by night and day. They drew all zentangle patterns and designs with sharpie before filling in sections and warm and cool liquid watercolors.
